Singer-songwriter Scarlett Gee is rediscovering her roots in her latest release Texas Lights, out now. The Australian artist, known for pop tracks Ghosts and All the Things, is strapping on those cowboy boots as she trades synths for steel strings and steps into a more country-inspired sound.
An ode to her rural upbringing (Scarlett grew up in the Australian countryside), Texas Lights offers a more stripped back, acoustic style that mirrors the vulnerability she felt as she prepared to step into new territory: “I was definitely nervous to bring the country idea to my team” she says. “And I know some fans might not expect it. But this is the sound that feels most like me right now.”

Whilst the style might be different, one thing that remains the same is Scarlett’s ability to connect with listeners when it comes to matters of the heart. Her previous track Ghosts speaks of the heartbreak we feel when somebody moves on faster than we do, whilst All the Things mourns the end of a relationship when no one’s to blame. And Texas Lights sees Scarlett turn the focus inwards. Written after a break up, she speaks about the process of getting back to yourself and making peace with change. Rather than drilling this message into the listener through heavy beats, Scarlett delivers the message with softness, almost like she’s holding our hand throughout. Written with collaborator Jacky McCormack, a songwriter with deep ties to Australia’s country music scene, Texas Lights is built on delicate harmonies: “I didn’t want this to sound overproduced. I wanted it to feel like a memory, a little blurry but warm” Scarlett reflects.
As they say, sometimes you have to break-up to break-through. As Scarlett enters into a new chapter, Texas Lights is a reminder to all of us that we can always rediscover parts of ourselves that we thought we had lost. With hopes for playing festivals in the next year, and with more music in the pipeline, it looks like this could be her most exciting era yet.
