Nautical Superstition dives into this strange world of maritime folklore, imagining a cast of characters bound by the rituals, myths and peculiar rules of life at sea.

At the heart of the story is Pig, a fashion collection by Los Angeles-based designer Teodore Mata. Inspired by the theatricality of maritime characters and the folklore that surrounds them, the collection becomes a vehicle for exploring a world where superstition and fantasy collide.

One such belief is that saying the word “pig” aboard a ship brings bad luck - a curious superstition rooted in the belief that pigs cannot swim. Here, that folklore becomes something more surreal: a starting point for a visual narrative populated by eccentric characters, exaggerated silhouettes and an atmosphere somewhere between reality and reverie.

Photographed at Lightship 95 Studio, the editorial transforms the space into a world at sea, with styling, beauty and lighting working together to create a distinctly otherworldly crew. The result is a playful fashion story where folklore becomes fantasy and superstition becomes its own kind of style language.
