Alana Hil’s latest EP Diaries of a Common Woman is out now.
Soulful, cinematic, and unapologetically honest, Alana Hil’s new EP Diaries of a Common Woman is a masterclass in turning personal struggle into art. Out now, the EP arrives alongside the video for lead single “In Between,” a track that perfectly embodies the emotional currents running through Hil’s latest work.
From the first note, it’s clear that this project is intimate and unfiltered. Hil’s experiences navigating Borderline Personality Disorder, mania, numbness, and depression are not just inspiration - they are the pulse of the music itself. “Every song was written about how I am feeling emotionally, mentally and spiritually,” she says. “I wanted to hone in on what I am going through because having a mental illness can be so frustrating.” Rooted in her Kentucky upbringing and a lifelong love of soul, the EP blends R&B, pop, and cinematic textures to create a sound that is both nostalgic and unmistakably modern.
At the heart of the EP is “In Between,” a track Hil describes as capturing the fluidity of human emotion. “I hope listeners can take away that we are never here nor there. Always moving like the sea, with storms and tides. It’s ok not to be ok and the storm will calm,” she explains. The accompanying video brings this philosophy to life through contemporary dance, a medium Hil calls essential for expressing what words cannot. “Visual storytelling is a passion of mine. The shapes the body can make and how it can move can simply say things words cannot,” she says.
Hil’s openness about mental health is not just a creative choice, it’s a statement of empowerment. “I hope women can be more gentle on themselves. I feel women especially receive a lot of criticism for having more emotional fluctuations; hormones, etc.. It is important to stand in our power.” This thread of resilience runs throughout the EP, whether in the reflective “Love and Mental Breakdowns” or the tender, heart-wrenching “Heartbleed Over Coffee.”
The release marks a new chapter for Hil after touring with Macy Gray last summer. “I am a stronger performer; I am more confident in my abilities as an artist and performer… I already feel more connection to the crowd, to my band and to myself. Growth is most important to me. I will never stop striving to be the best version of myself.”
Looking ahead, 2026 promises more milestones. Hil will continue touring Europe, play mini tours across the southern US, and release Diaries of a Common Woman Volume 2. She also has a feature on CyHi The Prynce’s upcoming album.
In true F Word fashion, we asked Hil her favourite “F” word: Frequency. “Our frequency radiates. I do my best to stay dedicated to my meditation and yoga practices so I can elevate my frequency,” she says - words that perfectly encapsulate an artist who transforms vulnerability into power.
With Diaries of a Common Woman, Alana Hil doesn’t just share her story - she invites us to feel it, and in doing so, turns personal reflection into a collective experience of catharsis, resilience, and soulful honesty.
