AGE GAPS AND ALT-POP: ZOLITA'S EMPOWERING NEW SINGLE

Having  interviewed  the incredibly uplifting and empowering Zolita  back in April, I was excited when I heard she was dropping her (now on repeat) new single, “Bye Bye Baby.” I knew it wouldn’t disappoint, but I didn’t realise just how much it would resonate. Once, a guy told me he didn’t want to continue to date me, a 30-year-old, because "all I'd want was to have babies and get married." It stung, especially when he went on to be with a 21-year-old. But my 30-year-old brain quickly figured out the real reason: younger women were more likely to put up with his juvenile bullshit - just like I did in my early twenties. For context, he was 34-years-old.

As I’ve perhaps already overshared (something that, unfortunately, doesn’t seem to change with age), this song is for anyone who's felt betrayed by someone who made them feel special for the wrong reasons. It’s for those who find the courage to confront the messy realities of toxic, age-gap relationships. “Bye Bye Baby” is both a scathing and empowering track, blending guitar-driven alt-pop with a country twang. Zolita explains: "'Bye Bye Baby' is a ruthless breakup song about an all-too-common stereotype - your ex finding someone younger and more naive instead of growing up themselves. The lyrics are pretty brutal, reminiscent of the passive aggressiveness of the '90s, but sonically it’s sunny, relaxed, and inspired by my favourite Sheryl Crow songs."

But it’s not all harsh. Zolita’s signature tongue-in-cheek style is woven throughout, and the video even features adorable baby animals - check it out!

Zolita is currently wrapping up an extensive U.S. headline tour, where she performs as Lesbian Supreme, with three costume changes and nightly competitions for the best fan-designed sashes. We wouldn't expect anything less.
