WORDS MAISIE JANE DANIELS
I arrived at The Barbary early on a Wednesday evening, expecting the quiet hum of midweek diners. Notting Hill, with its pristine streets and tasteful Christmas lights, felt a world away from my Tottenham postcode, where my neighbours’ annual display resembles the permanent flashing of ambulance-coloured lights through my window. Yet, stepping into the Grade II–listed corner building on Westbourne Grove, I felt instantly cosy and settled. The restaurant was alive: diners chatting over glasses of champagne, cocktails clinking at the bar, and the exposed kitchen putting on a show of flames and flair.
Speaking of drinks, the Smoked Pineapple Paloma is an absolute must for tequila lovers - a smoky, citrusy start that hints at the evening to come.

We began with the Barbari Bread and Spinach Borani, a simple yet delicious opening. From there, the menu offers plenty of indulgence. The mains don’t disappoint: the Spiced Beef Short Rib was so tender it fell off the bone with barely a touch, while the Chilli Cauliflower and Burnt Tomato Salad hits all the right savoury notes. For seafood lovers, the Spiced Yellowtail Collar or the Butterflied Sea Bass with Chermoula sounded divine.
I always say I’m not a dessert person, but the Pistachio Hashcake was so perfectly soft and flavourful that I might need to reconsider. My guest’s Olive Oil Ice Cream was a revelation - salty, smooth, and utterly unique - a savoury surprise that lingered long after the last bite.

If you’re looking for a lively, luxurious, and slightly theatrical spot to see out 2025 and toast 2026, The Barbary delivers in every sense: food, drinks, and atmosphere all wrapped up in that distinctive Notting Hill charm. With the NYE menu priced at £90 or £120 per person, it’s worth every penny for a night that promises sparkle, fire, and a few culinary surprises along the way. Reservations here.
