There are moments in life where the truth is standing directly in front of you, yet your mind refuses to accept it. That suspended state (somewhere between knowing and believing) forms the foundation of Surely They Won't, the latest release from London-based pianist, producer and vocalist patch_t41b, the musical project of Laurie Erskine.

Formed on instinct rather than intention, the track feels less like a composition and more like a moment that was always destined to happen. A song exploring the space before acceptance emerges from an improvised performance; the process itself becoming the perfect metaphor for the subject matter.

Written and recorded during a week-long studio residency, the single was born from a simple piano sequence Erskine had been playing alone before inviting his band into an entirely unplanned recording session.

"I love this tune partly because it was made completely spontaneously," he explains. "We had hit a bit of a wall in the studio and I was getting frustrated. On the seventh morning I was sitting alone at the piano playing a little irregular chord sequence. It's simple, nothing special, but it had a mood to it. I suggested we record a jam, gave no instructions to the band, and I just started playing the sequence and let them interpret it anyway they felt it."

What followed became the finished recording.

There's an unforced quality running through Surely They Won't that gives the track its emotional weight. Built around a repeating piano motif, it unfolds naturally, allowing each instrument to find its place in real time. Rather than rushing towards a destination, it lingers in uncertainty, exploring the fragile psychology of denial and disbelief.

Echoes of Pink Floyd-esque ambience drift through the track's DNA, carrying listeners on a deeply introspective journey. Crackling textures and distorted undercurrents sit beneath a beautifully delicate vocal performance, creating a striking contrast where beauty collides with grit. It's cinematic without feeling overproduced; expansive without losing its intimacy.

The title itself acts as a nervous refrain - the phrase we repeat to ourselves when reality feels too overwhelming to process. patch_t41b captures that sensation with remarkable precision, soundtracking the exact moment before acceptance arrives, when the disaster is already visible but still feels psychologically impossible.

What makes the track particularly compelling is its refusal to follow conventional songwriting logic. It evolves according to instinct rather than structure, unfolding in a way that feels both familiar and slightly disorientating.

Erskine himself embraces that tension.

"The structure doesn't really make sense as a song but that in turn leaves me wanting more and I'm able to get lost in it more easily," he says. "But it's still a song and not that much of an abstract thing. That's interesting to me."

That sense of discovery is something Erskine clearly values within the recording.

"For me this way of writing has a certain purity to it that you just can't get when you re-record it," he explains. "In the end the song seems to arrive from another world. It's no longer tangled and tainted by the mind because there's just no time to think."

And perhaps that's exactly why Surely They Won't resonates so deeply. In an era where so much music is meticulously planned, polished and perfected, there's something refreshing about hearing a track trust instinct so completely. It doesn't feel manufactured. It feels discovered.

Lyrically, the song circles around a question that feels increasingly difficult to ignore. How long can we deny what we already know to be true? Whether interpreted through personal grief, collective anxiety or the wider uncertainties of the world around us, patch_t41b leaves the answer deliberately unresolved.
