WORDS MAISIE JANE DANIELS
Every summer needs its soundtrack. The songs that spill out of car windows, soundtrack rooftop evenings and somehow find their way onto every playlist worth saving. At a time when the world feels particularly hot and heavy, Tone Stith arrives with exactly the kind of release we need right now.
Bold, vibrant and impossible to sit still through, THE EDGE is a ten-track reminder that music can still be an escape.
The New Jersey artist, singer, songwriter and producer has built a reputation as one of R&B's most exciting talents, but on THE EDGE he pushes beyond familiar territory. Blending elements of soul, funk, pop and melodic R&B, the project feels less concerned with fitting into a genre and more focused on creating a mood. And what a mood it is.
Coming straight out of the gate with the title track, THE EDGE immediately establishes the album's energy. Driven by an infectious rhythm and a sense of movement that runs throughout the project, it's the kind of track that needs to be played loud. Summer-ready from the very first beat, it captures the freedom of letting go and living fully in the moment. That feeling carries throughout the record.
Interestingly, every track title appears in capital letters, and somehow that visual choice perfectly reflects the music itself. Nothing here feels timid or understated. These songs are designed to be felt. Bold, loud and full of personality, THE EDGE embraces confidence without sacrificing musicality.
Across the album, Tone showcases the full extent of his artistry. PAGEANT STAGE leans into cinematic territory, pairing elegant piano melodies with his effortlessly smooth vocal delivery. Meanwhile, FLY emerges as one of the album's standout moments, elevated further by the presence of the legendary Stevie Wonder. The collaboration feels organic rather than performative, adding another layer of warmth to a track already bursting with optimism and joy. Elsewhere, I QUIT injects a rebellious energy into the project, fusing sharp lyricism with guitar-driven intensity, while closing track BETTER DAYS offers a softer, more reflective finale. It's here that Tone allows vulnerability to sit alongside hope, bringing the album to a satisfying close without losing the uplifting spirit that defines it.
Speaking on the project, Tone explains:
"On this project, it was a collaborative effort, and that's why it has a special sound to it. This album reflects my upbringing. Funk music, Soul music, and elements of pop. The songs I was doing before were traditional R&B. R&B encompasses a wide spectrum. I want [this album] to feel more edgy."
And that's exactly what THE EDGE achieves.
Rather than abandoning his roots, Tone expands them. The album embraces the richness of R&B while welcoming influences from across the musical spectrum, resulting in a body of work that feels both contemporary and timeless.
With his signature falsetto, sharp songwriting and clear ear for production, Tone Stith continues to prove why he's one of the genre's most compelling voices. But more importantly, THE EDGE feels like an artist having fun with the possibilities of music again.
And honestly? That's infectious. Whether you're driving with the windows down, dancing in the kitchen or searching for the soundtrack to your summer, THE EDGE arrives on an ice-cold platter, ready to be devoured.
