INTRODUCING: SEHRA

Hailing from West London and deeply influenced by her Punjabi-British musical heritage, Sehra has spent years refining her artistry and carving out a sound that's distinctly her own. Seamlessly blending the nostalgic vibes of R&B with rich elements from her Asian roots, she crafts a sonic experience that feels both familiar and refreshingly new.

Her latest track, "Friends," is a laid-back, upbeat R&B single that mirrors Sehra’s easygoing personality. It's the perfect soundtrack for those summer days when the sky is all blue and the breeze is nowhere to be found. But “Friends” is more than just a feel-good summer anthem; it beautifully captures the thrilling and sometimes bewildering journey of falling in love. Through lyrics like “we could be friends, but we’re falling in love,” Sehra invites listeners on an emotional journey - one that many have experienced - the confusing and beautiful transition from friendship to something deeper. With its catchy melody and chilled-out vibe, "Friends" is a track you'll want to play on repeat, whether you're soaking up the sun or reminiscing about the early stages of a new relationship.

At F Word, we couldn't wait to chat with Sehra. We delved into how her early musical experiences have shaped her sound, the creative process behind "Friends," and even discovered why she’s a real-life mermaid. With a new single set to drop at the end of August, there’s much to look forward to from this rising artist.

MD: Hey Sehra, welcome to F Word! What does your week look like?

Sehra: Hey! Thank you for having me! Music, rehearsals and gym! On repeat!

MD: Let's go to the beginning: you were born and raised in West London within a Punjabi-British musical family. How has that influenced your sound today?

S: Music was the heartbeat of my childhood. My dad is a talented musician and singer and my mum loves music, our home was always filled with melodies and rhythms. I was lucky enough to grow up surrounded by a symphony of genres. Those moments, where our house was alive with song and dance, are some of my most cherished memories.

MD: At what point did you realise you wanted to pursue music as a career?

S: I’ve been singing since I could talk and music has always been a part of me. I went to a specialist performing arts school and after my first ever solo performance I knew it was something I wanted to pursue. Being on that stage performing for the first time felt so surreal but incredible and confirmed that this was all I wanted to do!

MD: Your latest single, "Friends," is out now. Can you talk us through the ethos of the track?

S: "Friends" is a topic that I feel almost everyone has experienced at least once. It’s about two friends who gradually recognise the unmistakable signs of falling in love. It's a song that encapsulates the excitement and uncertainty of new love - perfect for that summer love!

MD: Does it draw from your own personal experiences?

S: There’s always back and forth at the initial process of creating a song. Trying to understand and workout what you’re trying to say can be a challenge, however "Friends" was a subject born out of a conversation I had during the creative process and it just flowed! But I can definitely relate!

MD: What does the writing process look like for you?

S: It’s so fun because I get to work closely with some amazing creatives and writers such as; Maleík Loveridge, Jazz Montell, Nia-V and Sean 1da! We have great conversations and they really help tell my story and bring it to life!

MD: What do you like the most about discovering new love?

S: One of my love languages is quality time, so teaching each other, growing together and being best friends is what I appreciate and cherish the most.

MD: Let's talk about the visualiser for "Friends." I like the simplicity of it; it seems to reflect the simplicity of falling in love with a friend.

S: As soon as we finished creating the song, I envisioned exactly how the visualiser would look. I aimed for it to be simple yet relatable, something that would resonate with everyone who’s been in this situation!

MD: Who features in the video with you?

S: He's a friend of a friend who seemed perfect for the role! His goal was to bring to life the journey from friend to love interest. He really showed up on the day of the shoot and totally nailed it!

MD: Where would you most like to hear "Friends" being played, and why?

S: All over the world! I want my music to reach millions of people and to play a part in some of the most memorable moments of their lives! I want people to feel understood, empowered and connected emotionally! Music is a spiritual thing!

MD: Can you describe the feeling of the track "Friends" in three words?

S: Relatable, Warm, Nostalgic

MD: Your sound is very chilled out. Would you say that reflects you as a person?

S: Most definitely! Anyone that knows me, knows I’m super laid back! I’m a ‘live in the present’ and ‘enjoy every moment’ type person. If I’m not working, I love spending time with family and friends even doing nothing! Just enjoying every moment.

MD: What inspires you the most lately?

S: Water is and has always been one of my biggest inspirations! I used to be a swimming teacher; I’ve always felt a deep connection to it. I feel like being near water creates a clear mind for me and inspires me a lot! A real-life mermaid!

MD: What was the biggest change you made to the single during the writing process?

S: The only real changes were made after writing the song; where we would go in and fine tune the lyrics but "Friends" was one of those songs that wrote itself and didn’t need many changes!

MD: Do you have anything coming up that we should know about?

S: I have a new single coming out at the end of August which I’m super excited about! Keep an eye out for that!

MD: This is F Word magazine! What's your favourite "F" word?

S: FRIENDS!
