MODELS REFLECT ISOLATION: ZOE KEZIA

ZOE KEZIA, 21, London at Models1

reflecting isolation

F WORD: How have you been dealing with the whole isolation thing?

ZOE KEZIA: The whole situation feels so surreal and dystopian; I’m not sure if 'operating as normal’ is a good way to put it but I’m definitely trying to stay as calm and balanced as possible so that I’m able to actually concentrate when I need to do work and don’t end up getting overwhelmed.

F WORD: What have you been doing to occupy your time and mind?

ZOE KEZIA: Besides playing on my Playstation with my boyfriend and experimenting with new plant-based meals; on weekdays I focus on my uni work. I also have a YouTube channel and blog so I’ve been creating content for them too. Finally, I spend a bit of time every day looking after my plants. Learning how to look after each one properly is a real process, albeit a refreshing and fulfilling one.

F WORD: How are you feeling about the COVID-19 pandemic?

ZOE KEZIA: I’m not really sure how to describe my feelings. It’s kind of a combination of fear, hope, anxiety and peace all at the same time? How is that possible? It’s saddening that some people are not treating the situation seriously at all, and others at the other extreme are stockpiling and making life even more difficult for those who aren’t able-bodied, sick or at a higher risk of catching the virus. Then on the other hand, up until I started self-isolating, life had become extremely hectic as I tried to navigate my life as a full-time uni student and (more-or-less) full-time model. Having lots of time to myself is essential for me to stay centred, and before quarantine, I definitely wasn’t getting enough time off to recover mentally and physically from everything life was throwing at me.

F WORD: What are your thoughts on how our government and the world is dealing with it?

ZOE KEZIA: The British Government are clearly struggling to control the situation and I appreciate that there is an abundance of things to consider when It comes to ensuring everyone’s safety and ability to survive (even though this is their job), but I’m still quite baffled at their attempt to instigate ‘herd immunity’ with seemingly very little evidence proving its effectiveness. It was essentially them enforcing natural selection in an extremely brutal ‘if it’s your time to die, you’ll die’ kind of way. Then just like that, they acted as they’d never heard of it. It was concerning that up until the strict measures were put in place, public transport was still packed, which indicates that the government really need to sort out financial aid for the everyone so that people are not forced to work and put themselves and others at risk.

F WORD: What would be your perfect soundtrack for this time?

ZOE KEZIA: I’ve just been listening to what I normally listen to; I have different playlists for different times of day, but Tom Day’s album '2012' has been really getting me through.

F WORD: Can you suggest a movie/series/or book we should check out during isolation?

ZOE KEZIA: I’m definitely 100 years late to the party here but my boyfriend and I have been watching 'Studio Ghibli' films on Netflix. We started with Spirited Away and it’s been an uphill journey ever since.

F WORD: A Hopeful statement to encourage others:

ZOE KEZIA: I really sympathise with anyone who’s part of a dysfunctional family that is being forced to stay home. All I can say is life won’t be like this forever! Keep to yourself as much as you can, keep in touch with friends, try to find new ways to escape/release in your environment. It is hard I know, but it will help the time pass much quicker!

F WORD: Favourite F-word

ZOE KEZIA: Finicky. I just like the way it sounds [Haha].
