MODELS REFLECT ISOLATION (TALENT SPECIAL): SAM WAY

SAM WAY, 32, Devon at Models1

F WORD: What are your top 5 interests?
SAM WAY:
Chocolate, music, anime, philosophy, writing/songwriting.

F WORD: How have you been dealing with the whole isolation thing?
SAM WAY:
I've been feeling generally really weird about the loss of structure and how abruptly we've all had to adapt. I can kinda overdose on the news at the moment so for me it's important to stay informed, yet also busy with what's actually in front of me. My heart just reaches out to the people on the front line dealing with it.

F WORD: What have you been doing to occupy your time and mind?
SAM WAY:
I've set up a home music studio and I've been reading and learning online. I am also practising yoga as often as I can and have been able to go out for long secluded walks. There's new music coming out not only today but over the next couple months so those releases are helping in my mind to punctuate the time.

F WORD: How are you feeling about the COVID-19 pandemic?
SAM WAY:
I just can't wait till we have a better understanding of it, an active way to combat it and a way to bring our communities back together again. Some of the stories I've heard, some close to home, have been very sad. But I really believe there will be hard-earned positives and a fundamentally deeper understanding that comes out of this crisis. Whether there will be a lasting structural change to our lives and businesses, I'm not sure yet. Time will tell.

F WORD: What are your thoughts on how your government and the world are dealing with it?
SAM WAY:
Countries affected by SARS and MERS previously, got a hold on this much better than Europe and the rest of the world did. There are lessons to be learnt and we are learning them the hardest way. I wonder in the UK if the NHS wasn't already facing ongoing cuts and lack of funding before COVID-19 then things would have played out differently. Japan, for instance, it's apparently businesses as usual, but it's natural for everyone to wear masks around, the healthcare system there is also really good and how people socialise tends to be very different anyway. I guess I assume every country is doing it's best with what knowledge it has, and if it comes out later when we've had time to fit the puzzle all together that things have truly been overlooked... then... let's just say heads will roll.

F WORD: What is the best thing you’ve been able to do since isolation?
SAM WAY:
Wake up whenever I want.

F WORD: What do you miss the most right now (due to isolation)?
SAM WAY:
I miss my community, my people, going to the pub and all meeting up and not knowing where the night is going to take you. I miss the adventure.

F WORD: What would be your perfect soundtrack for this time?
SAM WAY:
'I Want to Break Free' by Queen.

F WORD: Can you suggest a movie/series/or book we should check out during isolation?
SAM WAY:
Oh so many in terms of movies; 'The Great Beauty' by Paolo Sorrentino. For series, if you haven't seen Chernobyl yet, it's a must! And for a book; try 'A New Earth' by Ekhart Tolle, or if like me you're a manga-head, Get into One Piece, it's a freaking masterpiece!!!!!!

F WORD: A hopeful statement to encourage others:
SAM WAY:
This too shall pass.

F WORD: Favourite F-word:
SAM WAY:
Fortune!
