CARSON MAGNUSON, 20, Washington Heights, NY at New York Models
F WORD: Tell us who you are.
CARSON MAGNUSON: Hola. My name is Carson, I’m twenty years old, and I like to write, so this might end up a little verbose. I live in Washington Heights, New York.
F WORD: What are some of your top interests?
CARSON MAGNUSON: Some of my favourite things to do include writing (as previously mentioned), Volleyball/Rugby, dancing, magic/cardistry, and a variety of creative projects (Videos, Coding, etc).
F WORD: How have you been dealing with isolation?
CARSON MAGNUSON: I think the effects have been negligible in my case, for a couple of reasons. I lean more toward introversion at heart. I tend to keep my social circle very small, spending a lot of time at home with key people. Most of my closest friends and all of my family reside in Germany as well, so the abrupt change of regular socializing from face to face to primarily digital means wasn’t all that much of a shock.
F WORD: What have you been doing to keep your mind busy?
CARSON MAGNUSON: Well, ideally I’d spend less time watching YoutTube, but all things considered, I do use the bulk of it doing more important things, such as: Studying the German language and computer science (I plan to take the C1 German exam in May so that I can eventually study alongside my friends back home.), writing, whether that be creative fantasy or coding and working out.
F WORD: How have you been feeling about the COVID 19 pandemic?
CARSON MAGNUSON: In truth, I’m rather worried. Not about the virus itself, but more so about the perilousness of my position, and the broader economy. I’d be in a rather rough patch if, for example, my job laid off their part-time workers (me), as I can’t exactly fly home to my family with the borders closed. Then there’s the fact that the entire economy seems to be suffering, and that doesn’t bode well for anyone.
F WORD: What are your thoughts on how the government/world is dealing with the situation?
CARSON MAGNUSON: It seems as though they are taking the necessary actions to mitigate the impact and keep people safe, and, hopefully, before long most everything will be back to normal.
F WORD: What is the best thing you have been able to do since isolation?
CARSON MAGNUSON: Study for long periods. I mean, I don’t particularly enjoy studying, but I do enjoy having done it, and the isolation and social distancing make it far more difficult to put off and just go be with some friends, which in turn makes me fairly productive.
F WORD: What do you miss most right now?
CARSON MAGNUSON: My family. I miss that I can’t just fly home and see them.
F WORD: What would be the perfect soundtrack for this moment?
CARSON MAGNUSON: Gotta be ‘Quarantine with Me’ by Call Me Karizma. Just came out, and it just fits.
F WORD: Could you suggest a book and/or a movie or series we should check out?
CARSON MAGNUSON: As for books/media/other forms of escapism you guys should check out, geez. There are a plethora of recommendations I could make. But I’ll limit it to two. If you’re up for an actual read, a page-turner if you will, then go check out 'Red Rising' by Pierce Brown. After a rather mild start in the first couple chapters, you won’t be able to set it down (I’ve probably read it around twenty times now). If you’re looking for something a little more passive, if just as entertaining, then try watching 'Altered Carbon' on Netflix (and the book is just as good, if not better).
F WORD: Give us a hopeful statement:
CARSON MAGNUSON: Just a quote I like to think about when things take a turn for the worse: “Only in the darkness can you see the stars.” - Martin Luther King.
F WORD: Favorite F-word?
CARSON MAGNUSON: Ooh I’d have to go with 'fantasy', just because it’s only into that genre that I can disappear completely.
